How we handle your information

What we collect
When you send a charter request we store your name, email address, phone number, and any company name and message you provide, together with the date, time, duration and number of guests you asked for. We also log the IP address and browser the request came from, as a defence against automated abuse.
Why we collect it
To answer your request, to send you an offer, and, if you accept, to carry out the charter and invoice it. The legal basis is performance of a contract, or steps taken at your request before entering into one.
Who can see it
The owners of the boat you asked about, and the skipper assigned to your charter, see what they need to do their part. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for marketing.
Your personal link
Each request gets a page of its own at a long, unguessable web address. Anyone holding that link can see the request and its messages, so treat it as you would a password. The link stops working after the period stated in the email.
Cookies
We set two, both from this website, and neither of them for advertising. There is no third-party tracking here, which is why you are not being asked to accept anything.
The first keeps you logged in if you use the staff area. It disappears when you close the browser.
The second is set only if you arrive through a referral link from someone who recommends us — a wedding planner, a photographer, an agency. It holds their referral code and nothing else: no name, no identifier for you, nothing that works on any other website. It exists so that the person who sent you here is credited if you go on to book, even if you take a few weeks to decide, and it is deleted after 30 days. We treat it as necessary to the arrangement, because without it we cannot tell who to pay, and the referral scheme does not work. If you would rather not have it, you can reach the same pages by typing the address yourself, or delete it in your browser at any time; nothing about your request or your price changes either way.
We do count visits, using our own software on our own server. No data leaves us. For each page view we store which page was opened, which language, what kind of device, and which site you came from if any. To tell visits apart we derive a code from your IP address and browser, mixed with a secret and the date. That code cannot be turned back into an IP address, and it changes every night, so it cannot follow you from one day to the next. We use it to count how many people visit and where they stop before sending a request, so we can fix what does not work. Figures older than roughly a year are deleted.
How long we keep it
Requests that do not lead to a booking are deleted after two years. Completed charters are kept as long as accounting law requires, currently five years.
Your rights
You may ask for a copy of what we hold about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted where we are not required to keep it. Write to post@yachtsnorway.no. You may also complain to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet).
