What time of year should you charter in Oslo?

Everyone wants July. They are partly wrong. Here is what each month actually gives you, from someone on the water all season.

The season runs May to September. July is the busiest month, August has the warmest water, and May and September are the two that get overlooked.

May

The light is the best of the whole season. Evenings stretch out, the fjord is nearly empty, and you can get the boat you want at a day's notice.

The water is cold. Nobody swims in May without regretting it. But if you are going out to cruise, eat and talk, May is one of the finest months, and the price reflects the fact that not everyone has worked this out.

June

Everything starts filling up. Midsummer is the single most requested date and it goes early. The light lasts almost all night, which is an experience in itself for guests who are not Norwegian.

The water is still brisk, but swimmable for the motivated.

July

The busiest month, and the one where we turn most people down. The Saturdays are gone long before summer starts.

The fjord is also full of other boats, particularly at weekends. That is not a problem, but it is not the quiet experience people picture when they think "yacht on the fjord". If you want July, book in March.

August

Our favourite, if we are being straight about it. The water has spent the whole summer warming up and is at its best. Holidays are over for many, so the fjord is quieter than July. The light starts turning golden again in the evenings.

For corporate days, late August is close to optimal: people are back at work, the weather is settled, and everyone is still in summer mode.

September

Underrated by everyone except those who have tried it. The clear days in September have a sharpness you do not get at any other point in the year, and the fjord is empty.

Bring warmer clothes than you think. And expect swimming to be something people discuss rather than do.

Outside the season

We run charters outside May to September too, but then it is an indoor affair. The saloon with its panoramic windows is genuinely a good place to be on a clear winter day, and the fjord looks like a different place. It is another kind of trip, and it does not suit everyone.

The short version

Want to swim: August. Want the light: May and June. Want the fjord to yourself: September. Want July: be early.

And whichever month it is, bring a jacket. It is the same advice all year, and it gets ignored just as often in July as in May.
